How to unblock Skype, WhatsApp, and websites in Egypt

Egypt’s government has banned hundreds of blogs, websites, and applications. To overcome these restrictions, you’ll need to use a VPN for Egypt. A VPN (Virtual Private Network) operates by masking your IP address and rerouting it to one of your choices. This enables you to access services such as Skype, WhatsApp, and Facebook that are prohibited in Egypt.

Best VPN for Egypt

We’ve suggested the top VPN for Egypt according to the following criteria:

  • For high-quality and consistent VoIP conversations, you need a fast connection and limitless data/bandwidth.
  • Encryption and authentication are robust and up-to-date.
  • No traffic logs detailing the content of web traffic are kept on VPN servers.
  • Both mobile and desktop applications are available.

IMPORTANT: While virtual private networks (VPNs) are permitted in Egypt, many of their servers and websites are restricted. We suggest that you sign up for and download a VPN of your choosing before traveling to Egypt.

NordVPN is our number one recommendation for Egypt. This Panama-based company delivers the fastest connections we’ve encountered, superior security, and various privacy and anonymity-focused features. Tor over VPN and multiple VPN connections are examples of this. NordVPN is an excellent bargain, allowing for multiple simultaneous connections. It supports both Netflix and Hulu in the United States, both in a browser and through their respective mobile applications. The firm maintains no records of its users.

NordVPN’s mobile applications provide an optional obfuscation function that masks your VPN connection as regular, unencrypted internet traffic.

Apps for Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, and Android are available.

Egypt’s VPN testing procedure

At PrivacyExplore, we employ a unique VPN testing technique that we have been perfecting for years, and we have listed the major criteria we used to suggest the best VPN for Egypt below:

  • Apps for all platforms. We verify that the VPN client software is compatible with Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. With bonus points for add-ons like browser extensions, Firestick applications, and setup guidelines or apps for using the VPN with other devices such as gaming consoles, smart TVs, and routers.
  • Secure. To circumvent limitations and censorship in Egypt, you’ll need a VPN with robust security features. We looked for firms that used established VPN protocols like OpenVPN and had sophisticated encryption options like AES-256 with complete forward secrecy. Additionally, we look for a no-logs policy.
  • Numerous handy features. Certain VPN providers demand exorbitant fees for a few simple VPN functions. We scour the market for VPNs that provide a robust feature set at an affordable price. Kill-switch, obfuscation, Smart DNS, split tunneling, port forwarding, Tor over VPN, and multi-hop connections are just some of the features available.
  • Protection against DNS leaks. We thoroughly evaluate each VPN we suggest to ensure there are no IP, DNS, or WebRTC leaks. This ensures that the VPN is delivering on its promise of anonymity by proxying your browser traffic and DNS lookup queries effectively. Along with testing for leaks, we verify that the applications have a DNS leak prevention mechanism to guarantee that the VPN is properly equipped.
  • Worldwide, high-speed servers. A VPN for Egypt is only as effective as the servers it makes available. We propose a fast, safe, and effective VPN. The VPN suggested in this article offers servers in at least 50 countries (including Egypt, to use local services privately).
  • Excellent accessibility. Each VPN is tested to ensure it can enable access to major foreign services such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video. Additionally, we verify that its Egyptian IPs function with famous local services such as Middle East Broadcasting Center (MBC) and Orbit Showtime Network (OSN).
  • Customer service is exceptional. We conduct mystery shopping sessions to evaluate each VPN’s customer service employees. We suggest a provider that offers email and live chat support and employs knowledgeable agents who can help you promptly if you have queries about using your VPN in Egypt.

Avoid free VPN applications.

The VPN mentioned above requires a monthly membership (though some do provide a money-back guarantee); we suggest them for a reason. They are expected to safeguard your privacy and provide you with the best possible service. Contrary to this, it is not in the business’ best interests.

Often, free VPNs are not looking out for your best interests. They often use out-of-date encryption suites, or worse, none at all. Some even install adverts or cookies in your web browser, reducing your privacy even further than it was to begin with. The few free VPNs that do not participate in these dubious methods generally have data constraints or bandwidth restrictions, rendering them unsuitable for VoIP calls and video streaming.

Due to these factors, we highly urge you to use a commercial VPN service.

How to use a VPN to unblock websites in Egypt

Unblocking the app or website of your choosing is simple after you’ve created an account with a VPN service.

Here’s how to use a VPN in Egypt to unblock WhatsApp, Skype, and other services:

  1. Choose an appropriate VPN service. (We suggest NordVPN.)
  2. Install the VPN provider’s app on the device of your choice.
  3. Launch the application and log in if required.
  4. Select the location option. While selecting a server in a neighboring nation can offer a speedier connection, if you want to unblock content that is geo-restricted to a certain country, make your selection appropriately.
  5. To connect, click “Connect” and wait for the connection to establish.
  6. Once the connection has been established, just access the website or application as usual. It should now be accessible!

If you continue to have problems, delete your cache and cookies and then refresh the website.

Why should you use a VPN in Egypt?

Egypt’s government has recently ordered ISPs to ban hundreds of blogs and news sites. Over a dozen people have been jailed for spreading false news, most of whom are journalists and dissidents.

A VPN may help you circumvent these restrictions and safeguard your online identity. Egypt currently has no legislation limiting the use of VPNs.

2018 social media legislation

According to Reuters, Egypt’s parliament enacted a bill in July 2018 authorizing the Egyptian government to restrict social media accounts and penalize journalists who produce false news. Any blog or social media account with more than 5,000 followers may be punished for spreading false news or inciting others to commit crimes.

Additionally, the measure makes it illegal for anybody to create a new website without first obtaining a license from the Supreme Council. The Council has the authority to prohibit or suspend existing websites and punish editors.

An Egyptian VPN can circumvent such restrictions and provide you with access to banned websites. If you’re a journalist or publication, a VPN may conceal your true IP address and make you seem to be in another country. More information is available in our guide to anonymous blogging.

Egypt’s VoIP prohibition

Egypt started restricting phone and video conversations using VoIP and messaging applications such as Skype, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime, and WhatsApp in August 2017, Quartz reports. The authorities essentially blocked access to such applications in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on two churches that killed 47 people. Egypt’s emergency legislation empowers authorities to monitor and shut down internet communications and media outlets without recourse to the judiciary.

According to sources, text messages are still working through these applications, but there is no way of knowing how long the ban on audio and video will persist. According to some opponents, national security is not the only purpose; Egypt’s telcos have complained to authorities about over-the-top calling applications that cut into their earnings by using the internet in place of their legacy phone networks.

A VPN will enable you to make and receive internet audio and video conversations.

Additional assaults on internet freedom

Whatever the cause, Egypt’s internet has a bleak future. The government has gradually increased its control over the internet. Apart from this latest act of censorship, Egypt’s previous noteworthy activities include the following:

  • Officials have disabled Signal’s encrypted voice calling capability. Signal is a secure messaging and VoIP application.
  • A newly enacted law would impose a mandatory life sentence on “anyone who creates or uses a website with the intent of establishing a terrorist entity; promoting its ideology; exchanging its messages and assignments; or funding, owning, wiring, and providing money, arms, ammunition, or explosives for the benefit of such entities.”
  • A lawyer was sentenced to 10 years in jail and a five-year ban from accessing the internet for allegedly disrespecting President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s Facebook postings.
